Capitalising on a wave of global success, the Filipino rum will be available in Sainsbury’s, solidifying its place as Europe’s fastest growing premium rum brand.
Unlike other spiced rums that tone down its flair, Don Papa Masskara actually uses tropical ingredients found on the Philippine landscape and is aged in American oak barrels before being blended to perfection.
Notes of rich Philippine honey add a sweetness to the flavour profile, combining with distinctive citrus notes from hand-picked calamansi lime, native to the Philippines. For those whose go-to order at the bar is usually a spicy marg, the fiery local pepper, Siling Labuyo – one of the hottest chilis in the world – adds a touch of heat and spice to proceedings that takes things to the next level, evoking the wildest edge of Sugarlandia.
On the palate, think rich, unctuous and sweet, with dark wild honey and milk chocolate notes, infused with orange oil. Then comes a surprising burst of heat from the siling labuyo chilli, alongside a warming, dry oakiness.
As for the history, this spiced expression is inspired by the iconic Masskara Festival of Negros Occidental, the annual masked fiesta dedicated to lifting spirits and smiling through adversity.
