In South Australia, 180 years ago, a winemaking revolution was brewing. Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold travelled to the state from England, bringing with them small vine cuttings from French Vineyards. After their arrival, they planted these cuttings on Magill Estate and quickly became one of the leading producers of wine in the country. By 1884, Penfolds was producing one-third of all of the wine made in South Australia, and in 1907 it was officially the largest winery in the state.

The brand has only gone from strength to strength since then, becoming one of the most recognised global wine icons. The distinctive red logo can be seen on shelves everywhere from London to Los Angeles, and an entire generation of drinkers has become acquainted with Penfolds' vast range.

Multi-regional and multi-varietal blending exemplify what Penfolds is best known for from a winemaking perspective – crafting wines to a house style. It is this winemaking philosophy that has allowed Penfolds to venture beyond the borders of its homeland, Australia, and experiment with producing Penfolds wines in France, California and China. Penfolds Grange is the original and most powerful expression of this blending philosophy, which results in a consistency of style and quality across vintages. Often referred to as 'Baby Grange', Bin 389 epitomises the brand's pioneering spirit and its winemaking style. A wine that has helped forge the brand's reputation with discerning drinkers around the world, Bin 389 combines the structure of cabernet sauvignon with the richness of shiraz.

Known for its consistency and long-term cellaring potential, which can be measured in decades rather than years, Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz remains one of Australia’s most collectable red wines. With a peak drinking window from 2025 to 2050 for this year's vintage, this is one of those rare bottles that you can take with you along life's key moments.

Put simply, Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz manifests all that is Penfolds," says Peter Gago, Penfolds' chief winemaker. "It's a wine that so many of us have grown with. This style extolls the wisdom of blending, as it does the synergies afforded by varietal and sourcing freedom."

It comes as no surprise that Penfolds Bin 389 cabernet shiraz pairs amazingly with steak, slow-cooked lamb shoulder and grilled venison, but perhaps more surprising is that it's a great companion to sausage pasta and sticky barbecue ribs, too. It's also the perfect partner for cheese (Christmas cheeseboards rejoice), and we recommend serving a glass with firmer, nutty cheese like comté, gouda, English cheddar, manchego and gruyère. Bon appetit!
