Athletic Brewing Company is America’s leading producer of alcohol-free craft beer. Founded in 2017 by Bill Shufelt and John Walker, Athletic Brewing was the first beer company to open a dedicated alcohol-free brewery and taproom in the United States.

However, the Athletic Brewing story is one built from necessity and ingenuity. The seed of the brand was sown in 2013, when Shufelt gave up alcohol to train for an ultramarathon. At the time, he had a successful career in finance and had no desire to become an entrepreneur. After discovering how much alcohol was holding him back from reaching his personal and professional goals, and recognising how little innovation had occurred in the alcohol-free beer space, Shufelt became obsessed with the idea of creating a better-tasting alcohol-free craft brew.

He began writing the business plan for Athletic on nights and weekends while studying brewing textbooks to better understand how he might improve existing alcohol-free production methods. Shufelt then recruited Walker to join him as a co-founder and head brewer, and the two pitched over 120 investors in an effort to get Athletic Brewing off the ground.

Athletic is now a top 20 US brewery and the third-largest alcohol-free beer brand in America. The company has produced over 100 million cans in less than five years, and it has custom brewing facilities in California and Connecticut. Its brews are sold in all 50 US states as well as Australia, Canada, the UK, and several European countries.

Athletic Brewing’s award-winning flagship brews – Run Wild IPA and Upside Dawn Golden – are available at Whole Foods Market and TESCO locations throughout the UK, as well as online.

Run Wild is the ultimate sessionable IPA for craft beer lovers. It contains 65 calories and is brewed with a blend of five Northwest hops. Upside Dawn is a classic golden-style brew. It is clean, crisp, and refreshing and has just 45 calories. Upside Dawn is brewed with a combination of English and traditional American hops and is gluten-free.

Additionally, Athletic has donated over $2.5 million to protecting and restoring outdoor spaces across the globe via its Two For The Trails program. Through its Community Impact Fund, Athletic also gives 1% of sales to organizations that support positive impact and opportunity. As of 2022, Athletic Brewing is proudly a Certified B Corporation™, meaning their brews aren't just good for the environment, but for you too.
