There are whiskies that tell you where they are from, and then there are whiskies that take you there. Torabhaig, a small independent distillery on the Sleat Peninsula of the Isle of Skye, belongs firmly in the latter camp. Since it first began producing single malt, Torabhaig has been quietly reimagining what peated whisky can be. Smoke here is not a blunt instrument but something more refined, layered and expressive. The team calls it Smoke with Taste.

This year brings an important new chapter in that story. Sound of Sleat is the fourth release in the distillery’s Legacy Series. It takes its name from the narrow stretch of sea just behind the distillery that separates Skye from the mainland. The whisky reflects that landscape with an elemental character that feels both elegant and untamed.

The Torabhaig distillery, on the Isle of Skye

Crafted from concerto and laureate malted barley, matured in Quercus Alba American Oak, and bottled without chill-filtration or colouring, it comes in at 46 percent ABV. The flavour profile is precise and evocative, with notes of citrus, apricot and maritime seaweed on the nose, a palate of bonfire smoke, honey and sea salt, and a finish that lingers with quiet intensity.

Arriving alongside it is Sound of Sleat Batch Strength, a new release bottled at 60.2% ABV. This expression intensifies the character of the original, bringing concentrated oak spice, fragrant tobacco, a waxy mouthfeel and a long coastal finish. It is bigger, bolder and yet still retains the elegance that defines Torabhaig’s approach. For those who want to taste Skye in its fullest form, this is the whisky to seek out.

Visual identity matters here, too. Each bottle carries original artwork by Skye-based painter Ellis O’Connor, whose sweeping brushstrokes capture the beauty of the island and the restless energy of the sea. The label is more than decoration. It is a direct connection to the place where the whisky was made.

Whether you are a collector following the Legacy Series or a curious drinker looking to explore a new expression of peat, Sound of Sleat offers an experience that combines craftsmanship, community and landscape. It is whisky with a strong sense of identity. It is whisky that brings you closer to the Isle of Skye.
