Most good ideas develop out of unique circumstances – finding new solutions to a variety of roadblocks. For Penny Bell, that spark of inspiration came on a night out in Berlin. Getting the party going with mint schnapps, she was struck by the balance of pure, piercing peppermint freshness with a tempering sweetness that offset the alcohol burn – she found the drink smooth and memorable, and realised there was nothing comparable back home in the UK.
Rather than simply let the drink remain a flagpole of German holidays, she instead set about developing her own comparable liqueur in the UK, to share that slice of joy with Brits, too. And so POLAR was born.
POLAR uses a sugar beet grain and natural flavourings to create a premium, clear liquid. It’s the first British-made peppermint liqueur of its kind. The refined flavour of POLAR can be enjoyed in a variety of ways – it's just as delicious chilled as an aperitif or digestif as it is as a twist on a variety of cocktails, like a spritz or as an elevating flavour in a choc-mint martini.
Travel is one of the greatest inspirations in life – it allows us to bring back new ideas and products to enrich our everyday lives. For some, that means grabbing a few bags of Lays to fill your suitcase with or as many bottles of local wine as you can realistically carry. For others, like Penny, it means seeking to pass that experience forward, and creating a product that utilises local flavours and manufacturing styles to elevate the market.
In the case of POLAR, it's obviously an approach that works – the spirit nabbed a silver gong at the Spirits Business Awards just a few months after launching. We'll drink to that.
