Did you know that 90% of the fish and seafood we eat in the UK is imported, and a similar amount of our own fish is exported for other countries to enjoy? This, you would assume, should be the other way around, and a few companies agree.
Sea Sisters are the first craft fish cannery based in the UK, and work exclusively with ethically sourced British fish and seafood to create a range of quality canned fish they call British Conservas. Locally landed fish are paired with high-quality ingredients and handmade sauces to make delicious, flavour-led recipes that are as good for the environment as they are on your lunch plate. Think fresh trout, sardines and cockles with premium extra virgin olive oil, harissa, chilli and garlic.
Sea Sisters was founded by Charlotte and Angus Cowen in Dorset with the philosophy of championing the British fishing industry and fishers who use low impact methods like small boats, MSC certified fisheries, women in fishing and British aquaculture. It’s also about celebrating our own native species, an extraordinarily diverse range that deserves to be front and centre of our seafood scene.
Interested? The best place to start is with their best selling bundle of eight, perfect for Christmas gifting. It showcases the finest variety of British fish and seafood: smoked rainbow trout, Cornish sardines with Tunisian harissa, Cornish hake with rosemary and capers, Norfolk whelks in kimchi and Welsh cockles with garlic and chilli.
With every can packed by hand, wrapped in recyclable paper and crafted close to the sea, Sea Sisters are changing the game of tinned fish. Whether it’s a relaxed Friday-evening supper or a dinner party spread, their Bundle offers a delicious way to discover what British seafood has to offer.
