There's something about Ladbroke Grove that just screams carnival, even when it's four months away and there's not a single can of Red Stripe hanging around the gutters. It's the area's Jamaican vibe that burger joint Boom Burger has hooked onto. In the interest of a fair review, we ordered every burger on the menu: the jerk boom (£8), with spicy jerk chicken, fried plantain and mango, was a personal favourite, with the eponymous boom burger (£8) a close second. The sides are more than a match, too – especially the plantain fries (£2) and jerk wings (£5) – and make sure you wash it down with a pint of rum punch. Don't wait four months until carnival; if you go now, the jerk sweats might have calmed down by August. – Cathy Adams
