Spain has always understood one of dining’s essential truths: food tastes better when it’s shared. Set down a few plates, open a good bottle and, before long, dinner has become an occasion.

This September, Eat Spain Drink Spain brings that spirit to restaurants, bars and shops across the UK. Organised by Foods and Wines from Spain, the campaign returns from 11 to 27 September with its biggest programme yet. This year’s theme, Tapas y Vinos, celebrates the enduring appeal of matching Spanish small plates with the country’s remarkably varied wines, from crisp coastal whites to rich reds and dry, food-friendly sherries.

In partnership with Squaremeal, restaurants and bars across the country will host special menus, tastings and events, with activity focused in London, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Bristol and Cardiff. Expect pairings that show just how much ground Spain’s food culture covers: jamón ibérico with fino, salt-cod croquetas with verdejo, or richly flavoured pork matched with sherry.

Croquetas at Barrafina

Some of the UK’s most prominent Spanish restaurants are taking part. In and around London, the line-up includes Barrafina, Lolo by José Pizarro, Lobos Tapas, Andanza, Arros QD, Bar Kroketa, Ember Yard, Opera Tavern, Camino Shoreditch and Bravas. Further afield, look out for Plates by Purnells in Birmingham, Curado Bar, Asador 44 and Bar 44 in Cardiff, Lunya and Lunyalita in Liverpool, Evuna Knutsford, and The Spanish Butcher in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Participating delicatessens and retailers will also offer tastings, promotional packs and discounts, making it easy to continue the experience at home. Pick up a bottle, add a selection of Spanish cheeses, charcuterie and store-cupboard staples, then invite a few friends around. The format may be simple, but it’s what makes it so appealing.

“Eat Spain Drink Spain is about bringing people together over the things Spain does best: good food, good wine and good company,” says Fernando Muñoz, UK director of Foods and Wines from Spain. With more venues and cities taking part than ever, there will be plenty of opportunities to do exactly that, one plate and one glass at a time.
