What's the draw
Balham's got a new resident, and it's bringing beef. Foxlow's not huge, but having the benefit of Hawksmoor's supply chain means you can get Ginger Pig meat – and some great wines – at less-than-central-London prices.
What to drink
We love a speakeasy, and this one's a doozy. Inside the restaurant, through a fairly incognito door and down a staircase you'll find The Owl. Whether it's a pre-dinner drink or you're just popping by, it serves up fantastic cocktails from a compact but well-stocked back-bar in a tiny downstairs room. Otherwise, Foxlow itself has a nice cocktail list, and we loved a Pulenta Estate La Flor Corte Joven malbec from Mendoza with our main.
What to eat
Meat-eater or not, you're in good hands with a menu refined by its big brother's experience and that doesn't overextend itself. After some great calamari and burrata with sorrel salsa verde, we tried a Ginger Pig rib-eye – lovingly ungarnished, all crackling fat and sumptuous, juicy tissue – and a juicy, ten-hour-cooked short rib with creamy, buttery mash and gravy.
